Are
You Protected From Bad Bosses?
Where
does that 500-pound gorilla sit? It might be right outside your office, but you're
not alone. Check out other resources for coping with
bad bosses from around the Web, as well as this report from Badbossology.com... Did
you ever have to deal with a bad boss? Ever have a manager who harrassed you,
took credit for your work or was just plain crazy? Worldwide statistics aren't
available, but surveys show that 40 percent Americans have worked for someone
who they classified as "bad."
Based on a recent North-American wide survey conducted at Badbossology.com,
it appears that many people do not believe that their HR Department helps protect
employees from difficult bosses. Badbossology conducted a survey from June 12th
to July 21th, 2004 asking for information on whether worker felt that they were
protected from the harrassment of bad bosses. Of the 1,505 people who completed
the survey, 76 percent believe that Human Resources staff are not helpful and
only 1 percent believe that they are very helpful. Said
Badbossology co-founder Gary Lahey, "Given the importance of Human Resources today,
we encourage people to forward these results to their HR departments as well as
managers and executives. If they feel that it may be risky to forward this information
themselves, it can be sent anonymously from our web
site." Bad bosses
are a big problem in corporate America. A Gallup Organization study of over 1,000,000
employees found that if a company is losing good people it is probably because
of poor managers. The top reason these workers gave for leaving their jobs was...their
immediate supervisor. Job satisfaction probelms caused by bad bosses don't just
make employees leave. Gallup also found poorly managed workgroups are an average
of 50 percent less productive and 44 percent less profitable than well managed
groups. Badbossology
is following up with a survey
to find out how helpful unions are in protecting employees from bad bosses.
