Deep Sea 3D Movie Review

Deep Sea 3d PosterWhat James Says: This weekend we went to see an IMAX movie, Deep Sea 3D, and it was pretty cool.

It was like you were under the water and the jelly fish and sharks were swimming all around you. The movie was all about the importance of each living thing. The coral reefs are dying off from swimmers and boaters not being careful and paying attention to them. All the creatures in the sea really depend on each other to stay alive.

The Coral reef is the feeding, hiding and living space for many fish. If any one part of the environment dies off then the other parts start to die off too. There are groups like NOAA, and the Coral Reef Alliance, working very hard to get the word out about the importance of the survival of the coral reefs and sea life. Especially in places where people travel to swim and see beautiful water and fish, like Hawaii.

The whole time you were watching and feeling like you were underwater the narrators were talking and explaining different sea creatures and their importance to you. Some parts were funny, like when the Mantis shrimp, was taking on the squid and won. The Mantis shrimp thinks he is a tough guy. He is so tiny he gets away with the totally "no fear" attitude because he has an awesome set of front claws. He can flick them so fast (as fast as a 22 caliber bullet) and so hard that they can shatter the shells of his prey, or even double pane safety glass (if there was safety glass in the sea).

They are extremely territorial and will use all of their fighting ability to defend their den; they'll take on anyone, no matter how big. Some parts were a little scary especially for my little sister and brothers. When the giant octopus ate the crabs there was spooky music playing. I learned a lot. The movie is kind of short but really packed with cool information and lots of fun.

Deep Sea 3DWhat Mom Says: "Deep Sea 3D" runs about 45 - 50 minutes, is rated "G" and approved for general audiences, all ages. It's narrated by Johnny Depp, and Kate Winslet.

We saw it at a local Imax theatre but to really get the whole educational experience you could go to see it at a local aquarium, and then tour the aquarium after the show. Tickets run $9.75 for adults, $8.50 for Seniors, and $7.50 for kids 3-12.

We went to see the movie with several of James' friends and all of our kids. Our two younger boys, ages 2 and 4, made it about half way through the movie before my husband had to leave with them. The other children ages 6 through 9+ loved it. It is a really great underwater experience. I think a bit too realistic for little ones who might not be able to distinguish and separate the fantasy and reality.

The larger than life screen and mesmerizing 3D effects paired with the music gave it a "really there" feeling. It was extremely entertaining, and the kids didn't even realize that they were getting an up-close science lesson. It was great watching the kid's reactions to many of the sea creatures. Seeing them reach up to try and touch the rays and sharks, all the while smiling and ohhing and ahhing. It was a very positive experience. Everyone loved the Mantis Shrimp and the Jelly fish, even the little guys who exited before the end of the film.

About the authors: James is the oldest of 4 kids. Mom is their Mother, a children's writer, educator & photographer. They live in New York with their Dad and pet dogs, cats, geckos, and turtles.
