Ten
Year Anniversary of the King of Search Engines
- You Can "Google It" -.

Happy Birthday to ...
|
From the
work by a couple of web nerds tinkering in front of a computer,
Google
finally incorporated as a company in September 7, 1998.
Ten years
later, in 2008 as Google celebrates a landmark anniversary, what's
still the phrase people use to suggest that someone look up something
online?
Google
it...
How did a
couple of computer geeks turn a simple algorithm into a multi-billion
dollar enterprise known as the Googleplex?
Was it the
"Do No Evil" rule that they promised to live by?
That probably
had something to do with it, but the key to the success of Google
was old fashioned business advice.
In short,
Google's founders built a better mousetrap, and it was such a
leap forward that, after 10 years, it's still the search engine
of choice for many around the world.
Ten
Years After Backrub
Google was
born as a search tool called Backrub.
It was designed to be a more efficient way to retreive information
in research documents at Stanford University where Larry
Page and Sergey Brin were grad students.
The now well-known
PageRank
was developed as the basic sorting algorithm for their search:
to find the best sites, just go to the places people trust.
Votes for
good information online tends to get links back from lots of other
good sites. Sites that have expert information that others find
useful tend to get more links. The better the site, the more people
will link to it, and the best sites will have the most links from
other top sites.

The good
old days ( ! ). Google as it looked in 1998...
The
Google Concept Was A Breakthrough.
In 1998, without
a good search engine to sort through the millions of sites online,
finding what you were looking for was an exercise in frustration.
Google cut through the waste and delivered good results. As people
discovered this wonderful tool they told everyone they knew who
used the Internet about it.
Meanwhile,
Google didn't have to pay for advertising. What they offered was
such a good product, the viral word-of-mouth buzz brought web
surfers in droves. Once you used Google, you were not to likely
to go back to the other search engines.

where Google was born.

On To Google
Advertising
The
next problem that Page & Brin looked at was getting more quality sites on
the Web to populate their search results. To bring web sites online cost money.
Most webmasters paid for the expenses out of pocket. The best way to get more
information sites online was to figure out how to make it worthwhile for experts
to spend their time writing and publishing links to other sites with good information.
There was a program
called 'Sprinks' that focused on "niche' advertising. Another company owned
it, but it just wasn't working for them. Google bought it and reworked it so that
simple text ads would be delivered based on content... another mind boggling concept.
AdWords for advertisers and the AdSense program for web site owners matched any
site with advertisers large and small. The webmasters could pay for the cost of
the site and the advertisers had a low cost way to reach people who were looking
for their product. Genius! Google
launched AdSense in March of 2003. Without the revenue that Google Ads produces,
they may not have reached a 10th anniversary! Internet
Advertising & The Web Explode
Once Google
offered an easy way for people to make money from their web sites,
the web gold rush was on.
Billions of
sites - good, bad and indifferent - were added to the inventory
of available sites. Some offered fantastic information while others
were thrown together to cash in on the quick cash. Internet usage
was increasing as more people discovered the wonders of surfing
the Net. Broadband connection added speed and eliminated long
waits for sites to load. People began to research and shop online.
The web, once
reserved for computer nerds, became a mainstream tool that almost
everyone used. As more and more people went online and places
to advertise became available, advertisers discovered an easy
and affordable place to market their wares.
It wasn't
all good news.
With the flood
of new sites, Google's job of delivering quality results to searchers
and advertisers got harder and harder. They responded with an
ongoing series of updates to the simple "follow the links"
rules of the original Google search engine algorithm. Today, weeding
out the trash is still not an easy task, but Google seems to be
better at it than any of the competition.
Still The
Top After Ten Years
A decade after
first bursting on to the Internet, the Google search engine is
still at the top of the heap. The company has gone public and
early investors have seen their shares soar in value. As Google
grows, the company continues to look for other ways to organize
millions of pages of information and make it more accessible to
Web surfers. There's still plenty of room for improvement in what
is now merely the early days of the Internet.
The
Google Crystal Ball
The future
looks bright for Google. New functions are added constantly. Webmaster
tools and new applications for users are always in development.
The best and the brightest computer engineers and programmers
are drawn to the laid back lifestyle that Google offers. The Googleplex
values original thinking and creativity. This results in an amazing
number of new products. Some are great and some are flops, but
they keep on coming.
In
addition to being a top ad network, Google is still an information aggregator.
Google Images
is a top place for finding graphics and pictures. Google
Maps and Google Earth
makes geographical and mapping data easy to find and use. The Google
Book Search lets you search the full text of many books online. Ways to track
your finances, health records and oganize your desk top are now available and
new apps are being developed and released in Beta on a regular basis. Happy
10th Anniversary Google!
The Internet
owes a lot to the nifty search tool and the two minds that dreamed
it up. You can't help but wonder what the next ten years will
bring ...
