We always appreciate insight into the mysteries shrouding the Search Engine Optimization process. When Martin Lemieux offered to share his experience with link optimization strategies, we couldn't resist. We think he brings up some excellent points that will improve your link campaigns and your site. Here is Martin's article... read and be enlightened...

The Buzz About Links
What's Your Campaign Strategy?

You can raise your internal rankings simply by tweaking your web site structure... providing good internal menus actually improves the navigation of your site which makes for a better user experience...

These days, if you pay any attention to even a small portion about what goes on with web advertising, you're sure to hear about how important it is for your strategy to include getting more links for your web site.

I want to discuss a little something called internal links:

See, most sites that I visit are well on their way to getting a great (GPR) Google Page Ranking for their site. Whoops, wait a minute, I mean their main page! Only: www.yoursite.com/index...

More often than not, many sites don't even provide a "site map" which simply indicates all the pages for the site. It's even written within the guidelines from Google! They TELL YOU to provide a site map! If you've never read the Google guidelines, don't be foolish and think you know what it says, go read them: http://www.google.com/webmasters/

Pay special attention to what you should do, and even more attention to what you shouldn't do!

On another note: The whole point of this article is to explain to you that you can raise your internal rankings simply by tweaking your web site structure...

It seems that in order to get a page raised to PR4/10, you need to have that page linked from 4 to 6 pages with PR4 or higher.

Let's say for instance, your main page is finally PR4, and let's also say that most of your pages are PR3... What you want to do is have your link optimization campaign focused on promoting 3 of the internal PR3 pages in order to boost them to PR4 as well.

Once you finally have PR4/10 for at least 4 of your own internal pages, you can finally raise your overall site ranking. Here's the fun part...

I want you look at your site and see if you actually list all of your pages on all your pages. If you don't... do this step right away and keep it clean. I know some of you might be thinking, well I have too many to list, or some of your might be thinking, I am already doing that. You may be interested in understanding why this helps... providing internal menus actually improves the navigation of your site. It makes for a better user experience and that makes everyone happy... especially you!

Just stick to that formula because once you have 4 of your pages with PR4/10 it won't be long before your entire site goes to PR4 (Given that all your pages are now listed on all your pages).

Once this happens, the next step is PR5!

The norm for PR5 is to get about 50-70 relevant PR4 links. Whether they are internally or externally. Please note that you need 50-70 relevant PR4 links for one page alone in order to raise that specific page to PR5. So if you want to raise your main page to PR5, get 50-70 relevant PR4 links to that page.

I hope we all know what happens to pages that are ranked 4/10 or better don't we? As our sites get better, our search engine rankings get better. Better rankings equals better traffic!

Have fun with this one and always remember to keep tweaking your structure in order to get the most out of your entire web site, not just your main page!

About The Author...

Notice that when we introduced this article, we said it could "improve your site" not your site rankings. The bottom line for consistently good rankings in any search engine is, and always has been, providing a good experience for the user at the end of the search. If you cheat and use optimization techniques to cloak a bad site... you will get burned. A campaign to add RELEVANT links... not spamming any site with a PR4 or better... will earn you plenty of respect from your fellow webmasters, Google and, most importantly, your visitors/customers. Promise something you don't deliver and you will just get everyone annoyed!

The better your site is...

  • the higher your ranking in any index will be - including but not limited to Google;
  • the better your link ratios will be - other sites LIKE linking to good resources;
  • the better your profits will be!

Trust is a vital factor in sales. Tricking people into visiting your site loses that... and it is very hard to rebuild! If you're a player, you'll get lots of traffic but it won't convert to sales.

By the way, the list you see here is an example of what this article discusses. It lets visitors know what other RELATED areas can be accessed from this page. This was added with no thought of Google rankings - it's just good site design, but as you see from Martin's comment, good site design = good Google rankings!
