Technology Tells Us You Are What You Buy
A century
ago merchants and bankers knew their customers on a first name
basis. However, as the population
grew, it became impossible to be familiar with every customer.
Mass marketing made it even harder to treat customers on a personalized
basis. Now, with the use of technology, merchants are learning
new ways to serve you better.
Electronic
shelf labels, bar code scanners and self checkouts not only have
helped eliminate mistakes and give the proper discounts and prices
based on past purchases, but also keep accurate data records of
the transaction. This allows the retailers to analyze buying trends
and reduce excess inventory.
Banks are
applying similar technology to today's ATMs. The ATM has become
a distribution center to fulfill an individual's banking and spending
needs. Financial institutions can now deliver personalized statements
and receipts with images of your deposited checks, as well as
offer special promotions such as credit cards, mortgage or car
loans based on your transaction history.
Companies
today are turning what you buy, where, when and how you buy it
into a win/win situation. Better services and shelves are stocked
with what you want and less clutter from the items or promotions
you don't, allowing services to be more specifically catered to
the customer.
