Where do the 2008 Summer Olympic Games take place?

Beijing, China - home to the world's biggest population at over 1 billion people - is also home to the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and now - for the first time in Chinese history, the 2008 Olympics.

Beijing was a natural choice to host the 2008 Games, having lost out to Sydney, Australia for the 2004 Summer Olympics by only a few votes. Now it's China's chance to shine on the world's stage as a major sports venue.

Of the 1.2 billion people who live in China, about 400 million are under 18, so there will be plenty of interest in watching the games within China along with millions more who will be tuning in worldwide.


Who are the mascots for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games?

The same colors as those found in the five Olympic rings, "The Friendlies" serve as the official mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Their purpose is to bring a message of friendship and peace — and China' s blessings — to children worldwide.

They are, from left - Beibei the fish, Jingjing the panda, Huanhuan the Olympic flame, Yingying the Tibetan antelope, and Nini the swallow.

Fu Niu Lele, a strong young calf, is the mascot for the Paralympic Summer Games.


What country has hosted the Olympics more than any other?

The United States has hosted the Summer Olympics four times; in 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri. in Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984, and in Atlanta in 1996.

• The Olympic motto is "Citius, Altius, Fortius" in Latin meaning "Swifter, Higher, Stronger."

• The five interlocking Olympic rings are blue, yellow, black, green, and red. They represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
