Summer Safety

With school's closing for the summer, we asked
staff Chiff.com columnist, Anthony Frank,
to create a summer safety guide just for kids!

Check out a few excellent tips, advice, and a complete
Internet guide to Kid Safety from a smart Summer surfer...

Summer Safety Tips by Anthony FrankFrom the beginning of fall through to the beginning of summer, kids work hard at school. During Summer vacation time school is out. Children want to go to the beach, pool, and just have fun!

But there are some things you should inform your children about.

For example, at the pool children think that just because there are life guards around they are totally safe — well, that's not true.

You need to inform your children to stay in front of you or in front of the life guard. Rough play and running around can lead to slips and falls. Spending a day in the hospital emergency room is not anyone's idea of a good time!

While at the beach, make sure to keep your children close by. It's easy to get lost on a beach where every blanket and umbrella looks the same.

Make sure your children know that they should stay close to shore when they go in the water, because the tides could carry them out into the ocean. Even strong swimmers need to be careful of riptides and sudden drops into deep water where sand has washed away.

Use the buddy system for extra safety. Always go swimming with another person who can help you out if you get into trouble in the water.

Be sure to explain summer safety to your children so they can report all the fun they had during vacation when schools starts in the fall.
