Red
Wine May Fight Lung Cancer
Spanish
scientists from the University of Santiago de Compostela have
announced that drinking red wine could protect against lung
cancer, but white wine may increase the risk.
Researchers
from the University of Santiago de Compostela found that the
tannins and resveratrol in red wine have anti-cancer properties
and may decrease the risk of getting lung cancer by as much
as 13 per cent. A glass a day may keep cancer away.
They found
that only red wines
had this effect.
Rose wines
and beer showed no effects and white
wine seemed to add some risk. Their guess is that the ingredients
in red wine that discourage the growth of cancer are less likely
to be found in roses and are absent from whites.
They say
all wine contains alcohol, which is a gene mutator, but in red
wine the anti-lung cancer benefits outweigh possible gene damage
from the alcohol.
The glass
a day limit is important. Drinking more on a regular basis carries
a set of health threats that outweigh any benefits from the
anti-cancer properties of the wine.
