Torino Travel Guide

Turin

Turin, Italy mapWith 900,000 inhabitants, the city of Turin (Torino) is located in the northwest Piedmont region and usually welcomes nearly 3 million visitors a year, lured to its most famous attraction, the Shroud of Turin. Unfortunately, the shroud itself is now rarely displayed in its home at the Cathedral of San Giovanni, but there is usually an exhibit that includes photos and information.

Turin Must-Sees

  • Piazza San Carlo - a huge, beautiful and stunning public space where you can admire the 17th century architecture, take a stroll, or sit and people-watch at one of the outdoor cafes well into the evening hours.

  • Museo Egizio - if Egyptian art is your thing, check out a world class collection of art and artifacts including the statues of Ramses II and Amenhotep II.

  • Museo dell’Automobile - Turin is Italy's version of the Motor City, so this museum is a must-see for international car aficionados for its collection of Fiats and other classic cars on display.

  • Castello Ducale di Aglie - Home of the Savoy family since 1764, this former castle dates back to the Middle Ages, and today is surrounded by a large park where visitors can enjoy a prime photo opportunity by the monumental fountain.

Getting to Turin

Trains, planes, and buses serve European, national and international connections to Turin, with its airport situated about 15km (10 mi) northwest of the city (Tel: 011 567 63 61).

The central train station, the Porta Nuova, located in the Piazza Carlo Felice, has daily connections with Milan, Venice, Genoa and Rome. Special connections are available with Milan's international airport using the new high-speed Torino-Novara railway line.

Getting Around Turin

Both urban and suburban areas are served by a network of buses and trams. The city's bus terminal is situated near the Porta Nuova train station, on the corner of Via Sacchi. Regional bus service is also available on the Sadem bus line offering special bus service between Milan and Torino. Boat service via the Valentino and Valentina is also available on the nearby River Po, with frequent stops at popular tourist attractions (map).
