2010 Oscar Awards
The full official roster of nominees were announced on February
2, 2010.
The 82nd annual Academy Awards aired live from Hollywood at the
Kodak Theatre on Sunday, March 7, 2010 on ABC at 8 PM ET.
This year, 10 major Hollywood films were nominated for best picture,
in a clever move by the Academy to further popularize the Oscars
with a wider audience. Hopefully, the new format will keep more
viewers glued to their TVs on Oscar night to see if their favorite
movie or Hollywood star wins.
Hosting duties this year went to the quirky combo of actor Alec
Baldwin and comedian Steve Martin, who co-starred in the December
release of "It's Complicated" opposite Meryl Streep. This
was the first time the Oscars have featured a hosting duo since
Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase in 1987.
2010 Oscar Buzz
Although upped to 10 nominees this year, the Hollywood hits that
continued to generate buzz throughout the entire awards season included:
The Hurt Locker - High tension and great acting combine in
this thriller about an elite Army bomb squad in Iraq, featuring
relative unknown actor Jeremy Renner.
Avatar - James Cameron's fantasy sci-fi blockbuster, from
the people who brought you Titanic. Have you at least seen
the trailer?
That is all.
An Education - The early Sundance favorite with a nationwide
release in theaters in October, it's the coming-of-age story about
a teenage girl in 1960s London played by 24-year-old Carey Mulligan
(already best actress winner at the Bafta
Awards, the "British Oscars.")
Up - This year's Wall-E, a funny and poignant animated
tale about a 70-year-old man and an 8-year-old boy on a wild adventure
in South America.
2010 Winners
Although Avatar blew away audiences with its 3D bravado, it only
managed to take home (as predicted) awards for Best Cinematography,
Art Direction and Visual Effects.
The motherlode of awards went rather to The Hurt Locker with wins
including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay,
Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Editing. With her win, The Hurt
Locker director Kathryn Bigelow becomes the first female in Oscar
history to win Best Director.
Another notable winner, Sandra
Bullock who most recently won WORST ACTRESS (for "All About
Steve') at the 2010 Razzies
was also up for BEST ACTRESS (for "The Blind Side') at this
year's Oscars. Her win gives Bullock the dubious distinction of
winning both worst and best awards in a single year.
