MAIN Arrow to Arts & Culture Arts & Culture Arrow to Movies Movies Arrow to Tribeca Film Festival 2012 Tribeca Film Festival

Practically reinventing the concept of a world film festival, Tribeca debuted in 2002 with a party atmosphere that celebrated the energy and creativity of the New York City neighborhood (the TRIangle BElow CAnal Street) in which it was founded.

It was a year after the 2001 World Trade Center attack as actor Robert DeNiro and film producer Jane Rosenthal created the festival and corresponding Tribeca Film Institute, to help in the recovery of Downtown Manhattan.

Since then, the Tribeca Film Festival has been a boon for local store owners and merchants in the heart of Downtown as more than 300,000 people flock to the area each year during the festival's traditional events.

This year, The Tribeca Film Festival kicks off its historic 11th annual movie fest on April 18, 2012 - and will run to April 29, 2012 showcasing more than 80 feature-length films in all, along with dozens of short films.

The biggest buzz making the rounds? That would be this year's closing film with the Tribeca premiere of The Avengers on April 28 as an all-star cast assembles in downtown Manhattan to promote the upcoming summer blockbuster opening on May 4.

Tribeca Film Festival tickets go on sale in April 2012 along with e-tickets to the Tribeca Virtual Festival for those who can't attend showings in New York City.

Along with showcasing indie features, short films and documentaries, Tribeca has become a true "people's film festival" featuring music concerts and comedy acts, a family festival over two weekends, a day-long street fair, and outdoor public "drive-in" movie screenings on the Hudson River piers.

Have fun!
