Apples Apples Everywhere

pumpkin picking courtesy UC DavisApple picking is one of the first things that comes to mind when you think of autumn. Trips to the country in the crisp clean air for baskets of delicious red, yellow and green apples are fun for families and groups of friends looking for a fun day trip idea. Cups of cider, lots of laughing and pictures to save the memories...

Once the picking is done, what are you supposed to do with all those apples? You can cook apples, candy them, stew them, bake them, make apple butter and even stuff a chicken with them.

Before you get to all that cooking, we should point out a simple fact. What is an apple besides a succulent sweet fruit? Rinse your apples under cold water and just bite in. Besides tasting heavenly, fresh picked apples are good for you. An apple a day keeps the doctor away... gives a hint to the medicinal benefits that can be found in an apple.

There are many essential vitamins in the average apple including Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, niacin, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, and potassium. If you need to add fiber to your diet, you'll find there is more fiber in an apple than in most cereal or bread. The high fiber content is good for maintaining blood sugar levels. Another great thing is that you don't need to prepare this healthy fat free, sodium free, low calorie snack if you don't have the time. You can just grab one and go.

How many different ways can an apple be served? There are countless amounts of mouth watering, belly filling recipes that range from traditional to modern. Different kinds of apples have different tastes. For example, if sweet is what you want do not reach for a Granny Smith. Certain apples are best for making applesauce while others are better used to make the best Thanksgiving apple pie. Bone up on all the recipes available and maybe invent a new one this fall.
