Thompson III and the Georgetown University Hoyas play Division I basketball
in the Big East Conference.
1920, the Hoyas have been regular season champions only 4 times but have been
tournament champions 10 times. They have entered the final four five times but
only made it to victory and claimed the NCAA championship only once -- in 1984.
Ewing and Henry
Hyde were Hoyas before they made history. Ewing, of course, went on to play in the NBA
and Henry Hyde was a member of the United States House of Representatives making the Hoyas a name to be reckoned with even in the stately halls of Congress.
In 2011, the Hoyas made international news headlines when they embarked on a good-will field trip to China only to get in a brawl with Beijing professsional team, the Bayi Rockets!
HOYA FUN FACT: The name Hoya dates back to the 19th century, when all Georgetown students were required to learn Greek and Latin. A student and basketball fan took one Greek term, hoya, and one Latin term, saxa, and made the cheer 'Hoya Saxa' which when translated literally means 'What rocks.'
