North Carolina TarheelsHead coach Roy Williams and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels play Division I basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference, better known as the ACC.

The UNC teams have forged a basketball powerhouse beginning in the early days of the colligiate sport. North Carolina played its first basketball game against Virginia Christian, on January 27, 1910.

The Tar Heels have been in 41 NCAA championships, taking home the Championship in 1957, 1982, 1993, and 2005.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were contenders for the championship — making it to the final two — in 1946, 1968, 1977 and 1981. They advanced to the Final Four seventeen times - the last one in 2008. in 2008, but . They are seeded number 1 in the Tounament in 2009 and have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.

They also have won 16 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament titles.

The Tar Heels won their first NCAA Championship under coach Frank McGuire in 1957. Dean Smith took over from McGuire in 1961 and coached the Tar Heels until 1997.

The fiercest rival of UNC is Duke University, located practically around the corner from UNC.

Some of the most notable players to come from this team are NBA star Michael Jordan. Billy Cunningham (Philadelphia 76ers), Brad Daugherty (Cleveland Cavaliers), Walter Davis (Phoenix Suns), Bobby Jones (Philadelpha 76ers), Michael Jordan (Chicago Bulls) and James Worthy (Los Angeles Lakers).
