Pittsburgh PanthersHead coach Jamie Dixon leads the University of Pittsburgh Panthers to play Division I basketball in the Big East Conference.

Despite their brilliant play during their regular seasons which has netted more than 20 invitations to the NCAA Tournament, the program has only reached the Final Four once... in their first appearance in 1941.

Pitt began playing men's basketball over 100 years ago. Their first season was in 1905 with Benjamin Printz as the head coach.

The team was not active from 1909 through 1911 when it was resurrected by Wohlparth Wegner who was head coach for just a year before turning over the fledgling program to Dr. George M. Flint.

One of the players Flint coached went on to medical school, but returned to his love of basketball and his Alma Mater. That man was Dr. H.C. Carlson, his players called him Doc... The Panthers brought home two Helms Foundation National Championships in the 1927–28 and 1929–30 seasons.

The legendary Doc Carlson coached those teams starring National Player of the Year and Hall of Famer Charlie Hyatt. He coached for 30 years until 1953. Bob Timmons took over when Doc retired and in 1968 Buzz Ridl followed him.

Tim Grgurich took the helm next until replaced by Roy Chipman in 1980. In 1986, Paul Evans took on the head coaching job and, when his contract expired in 1994, was succeeded by Ralph Willard.

Then came Ben Howland's six years before he was wooed by UCLA and his native California. He left the program in the very capable hands of the current head coach, his assistant, Jamie Dixon.
