The Boilermakers have a long history of winning basketball teams, but have captured only one national championship. The 1932 men's basketball team won the national basketball title. That was before the current NCAA Tournament format existed.

Purdue's Big Dance record is impressive. In 1969 they made it all the way to the final before losing the championship bid to UCLA. In 1980 they advanced to the Final Four, again UCLA denied them.

They were eliminated at the Elite 8 level twice and the Sweet 16 three times. In total, the Purdue Boilermakers have made 23 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Despite their history with UCLA, the Indiana Hoosiers are the team that they share the biggest rivalry with.

Matt Painter is the current head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team who followed his mentor, Gene Keady. Keady began coaching the team in 1980. Painter played for Keady from 1990 to 1993 and was hired in 2004 to replace Keady when he retired in 2005.

The list of top basketball names who played for the Boilermakers before going pro is long and includes names like Steve Scheffler, Carl Landry (Houston Rockets), Brad Miller (Chicago Bulls), Glenn Robinson and Cuonzo Martin.

Purdue plays NCAA Division I basketball in the Big Ten Conference.
