Under head coach Mitch Buonaguro, the
Siena Saints men's basketball team plays in the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference.
The
Siena team was originally called The Golden Warriors. Later they switched
the schools athletic teams' names to The Indians. In 1976, they became
a Division I school and in the late 1980s the name was changed for the final time
to The Siena Saints....
The
Saints have a history of winning in basketball teams. In
1989, the Siena men's basketball eam had a first round March Madness victory
(80-78) over third seed Stanford.
In
2002, the Siena Saints men's basketball team won an opening round NCAA Tournament
victory over Alcorn State. The Saints later fell to national champion Maryland
before 20,000 fans at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C.. In
2007, the Saints defeated Stanford again, this time with a 79-67 victory over
the then-20th-ranked Cardinal.
In
2008 their first round upset of fourth seeded Vanderbilt sent them on to play against Villanova. Since then, 2010 was the school's sixth
trip to the "Big Dance".
