One Web Day logoCelebrate life online!

That's the message behind OneWebDay, now held around the Web each year on September 22. Think of it as Earth Day for the Web.

OneWebDay began in 2006 to celebrate how the Web has influenced the culture and changed so many lives. Since then, the Web has not only made the world smaller and accessible, but instantaneous.

Just consider the speed at which rumors are spread on the Net or ,um, the latest hard hitting news reporting on Paris and Britney. What was once "don't believe everything you read in the newspapers" now applies to the Web. As always, a little common goes a long way.

But the Internet is not only a conduit for gossip mongering or misinformation — it's also an agent for good. How else can you can help Third World entrepreneurs get on their feet with a micro loan, or feed the world with a click?

  • The Web is practical. Businesses rely on it daily to cut travel costs through e-mail, Webconferencing, or to post important employe information on company Intratnet sites.

  • The Web is political. In election years, it's a battle of the blogs between liberals and conservatives to see who can score higher points with the voting public.

  • The Web is personal. Witness the rise of MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter not to mention sites that count votes from real humans like Digg or Yahoo Buzz, (or here at Chiff.com - that's our mission, too) to help organize the Web.

With all the momentous changes that the Web has brought to the world in the last decade, it's important to remember that the Internet is still in its infancy. Like in the Wild West, it's still wide open territory where anyone can move in to help change society, or make their fortune.

Celebrate OWD on September 22 by firing up the laptop and making your own contribution to help tame it or share your stories here.
