American idol logoAmerican Idol debuted in 2002 and has become a household name. Mostly anyone who wants to become a singer will audition, at least once, for this blockbuster reality show where everyone has shot at stardom! The ultimate goal is to win the coveted title of American Idol and a million dollar record deal!

Previous winners and even runner-ups have gone on to world wide stardom, such as Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Jordin Sparks.

Do you have a star at home who dreams of becoming the next American Idol? Celebrate their next birthday or graduation following these expert tips and ideas for hosting an American Idol theme party that's sure to be a winner...

Invitations

  • Download an image of the judges and attach it to the front of your invitation. Under the image write something like, "Are you the next American Idol?" Also try printing out an image of your favorite judge and under it write a phrase that goes with the judge.

Randy: "Dawg! You gotta come to this slammin' party!"
Simon: "I highly doubt you you will have a better time than at (NAME's) birthday party." Paula: "This party is the best so far! I am so proud to invite you!"
Kara: "I am feelin' it. This party is real!"

On the inside don't forget to include the time, date, address, and an RSVP number.

  • Since American Idol is all about singing, make a microphrone shaped invitation and glue glitter to the front. If you want to have a singing party make sure to include that inside the invitation so your guests have time to prepare.

  • Make it a costume party! Have all of your guests come as an American Idol winner of their choice. If you want to broaden the scope go out as far as top 10 of the last two seasons. Or go for big laughs, and tell your guests to choose someone who auditioned but didn't make it on the show, like the She Bang guy, who became famous for non-talent!

Decorations

  • Blue and silver balloons everywhere!

  • A red carpet, made out of red fabric or red tablecloth, leading up to the front door adds the celebrity feel!

  • Posters of past American Idol winners on the walls of the party area.

Activities

  • American Idol version of hot potato: hot microphone! Have everyone sit in a circle and play music. The microphone makes its way around the circle and when you stop the music whoever is holding the microphone has to sing the next line of whatever song was playing. Whoever is left gets a prize.

  • Collect crazy articles of clothing. Make sure to have funny wigs, neon clothes, sunglasses, dazzly shirts, bell bottom pants, etc. Arrange everyone in a circle and put the buckets of clothing, about three or four of them, all together in the center of the circle. Start the music as everyone walks around the buckets, play music. When the music stops, everyone runs up to a bucket of their choice and take something out and put it on! When the buckets are empty take a look around and see who has the funniest outfit! No need for a prize as all your guests will be hysterical laughing!

  • Get some white t-shirts and let everyone autograph each others shirts! Fabric markers are the best to use on t-shirts so make sure to have plenty of them in different colors.

  • Host your very own American Idol show. (Mention it on the invitation so guests will be prepared to sing or lip sync to a song of their choice.) If there are guests who don't want to perform let them help with makeup (have a table set up with hair stuff and makeup on the side), be a judge, or be the photographer. After each performance, each judge can address each contestant with comments that are similar to whichever judge they are impersonating. The judges can select a winner at the end who wins the grand prize.

Party Foods and Favors

  • Make a sign or a banner that says "VIP GUESTS ONLY" and drape or hang it above where the food will be served. Have chocolate covered strawberries, sparkling grape juice or apple juice in plastic champagne flutes, cheese and crackers, a carved watermelon basket stuffed with fruit. For main dishes, keep it simple and buffet style.

  • Make two sheet cakes and shape into one big electric guitar cake!

  • For favors you can use toy microphones, American Idol stickers and tatoos, cool autograph pens, guitar shaped key chains, and of course the candy!
