MAIN Arrow to Home Life Home Life Arrow to Entertaining Entertaining Arrow to High School Musical Party High School Musical Party

High School Musical movie castWhat a great idea for a kids movie night party!

The first High School Musical movie to wow children and tweens alike debuted in January 2006. HSM2 was aired in August 2007 and HSM3 was released in theaters only in October 2008.

Each movie had a different theme but all three had returning cast members Zac Efron (Troy Bolton), Vanessa Hudgins (Gabriella Montez), Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay Evans), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans), Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth), Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie), Olesya Rulin (Kelsie Nielsen), Chris Warren Jr. (Zeke Baylor), Bart Johnson (Jack Bolton), and Alyson Reed (Ms. Darbus).

A HSM party is fun to plan because there are so many themes to choose from that one is bound to fit your guest of honor! Despite "high school" being in the name, children ages 6 and up can sing along and quote lines from all three HSM movies.

The different themes of the movies make it easier to downplay the teenage aspects of the movie and gear your party towards a more childlike environment. At the same time it makes it easier to have a co-ed get together, which as any tween will tell you is vital to any decent party!

Invitations

  • Use HSM invitations which you can find at practically any store that carries party supplies, or make your own using High School Musical clip art.
  • Using red posterboard, cut out a megaphone shape and write "Go Wildcats!" on the front. Put all the important information on the back.
  • Make a ticket that says Admit One. This would be a good invitation for a tweenage party.
  • Make your own movie clap board. Use red and white posterboard and cut two pieces of the same size for the invitation. Attach them together in the upper left corner with a brad. Draw a movie clap board on the first piece as the cover of the invitation. (Draw some lines diagonal going from the top of the invitation only about a quarter of the way down. Draw a horizontal line from the left side of the invitation to the other directly under the diagonal lines.) Write something like "Your child's birthday party! Take 8 (or whatever the child's age will be.)"

Slide the first piece as if it were a clapboard to reveal the party information on the second piece of posterboard!

Go Wildcats posterDecorations

  • Make posters that say "Go Wildcats!"
  • Draw basketballs and put them on the walls.
  • See if any friends have child size portable basketball hoops and place them in the party area or in the backyard, if your party is outdoors.
  • Look for posters or printable images online of the stars of the movies.
  • Use red fabric and drape it on the wall as a stage curtain.

Activities

  • Play "pin the basketball on Troy". Tape a poster of Troy Bolton on a wall or door and have each guest try to get the basketball in one of Troy's hands. Since every basketball will have a guest's name on it this makes for a great souvenier for the birthday boy or girl.
  • Name that tune is a fun game. Play a few words from a song from the movie and see who can guess the name of it first. You can do that with other songs too not only the soundtrack from HSM.
  • Karaoke with the soundtrack and the lyrics, just in case anyone doesn't know the words.
  • Make two teams and play charades! Write names of all main characters, some popular scenes, or key phrases from the movie down on paper and put them in a hat. Each team gets a chance to draw a paper out of the hat and act out whatever it says. If the team that drew the paper gets it right they get a point. If they don't the other team gets a chance to guess and if they get it right they get the point. Agree to play to a certain amount of points. Whichever team reaches that number first wins!

Party Foods and Favors

  • Younger kids will get a kick out of a homemade concession stand. Just cut a couple of squares into refrigerator boxes and hand the food out through the holes! Popcorn, lemonade, hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza, or pigs in a blanket are all favorites with kids..
  • Practically any type of HSM party favor can be found online. Add some candy and a bouncy ball and your guests will have a great goody bag!
