Since it is a symptom of so many varying ailments, a sore throat is traditionally the most common reason why adults see a doctor.

It may be an indication of mononucleosis, or a painful symptom of chronic sinus infection, or even certain throat cancers - all good reasons for seeking help from a medical professional.

Parents of small children may also become alarmed at the first sign of sore throat which can indicate bacterial strep throat infection requiring a course of antibiotic treatment. Other conditions that bring on a sore throat include tonsillitis (red, inflamed tonsils) post nasal drip, and croup.

Most often, however, a sore throat is one of the first signs of a viral cold or flu which simply calls for plenty of extra rest and fluid intake (which helps moisten a dry, scratchy throat) and other home remedies on hand.

Salt-water gargles, sucking on throat lozenges, or a nice hot cup of tea with honey & lemon will also usually help to ease the discomfort.
