verbena flowerVerbena is that no-muss, no-fuss annual with the deep green leaves and delicately domed blossoms - and a reputation for being almost virtually carefree.

Heat and drought tolerant, verbena is easy to find in local greenhouses as well as sown directly from seed. Give them full sun and well drained soil, and verbenas will provide a reward of color throughout the summer including annual or perennial varieties in shades of pink, white, peach, blue and purple.

At home in rock gardens or as edging, verbena's small size also make it a favorite for planting in hanging baskets and window boxes, where it will bloom continuously with only a little help.

(Growing hint: pinch back dead blossoms as often as they appear to keep verbena flowering throughout the summer. For bushier plants, snip off the center stem.)

As an extra added bonus, verbena is known to attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the home flower garden. Recognized for centuries for its medicinal qualities, lemon verbena is also used in herbal teas to aid digestion and calm the nerves.
