Maybe you just need a quart of milk from the local supermarket, or a quick hangover cure from the corner pharmacy.

Fear not. Although it may seem like the 1st of January is a non-event, there's a lot happening at a mall or market near you.

In big metropolitan areas, you can usually rely on major department stores in some locations to open on New Year's Day -- especially for those giant clearance sales that help unload all the excess Christmas stock.

Some of the biggest stores - like Walmart, Macy's, and Target - will post regular store hours for hordes of shoppers lured in by white sales and other amazing New Year's Day sales and bargains.

Also check out the big retail pharmacies -- like Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid -- who also don't skip a beat when it comes to opening doors on the first big holiday of the year.

open Jan 1And, if you're planning to catch a good movie with friends on New Year's Day, then Hollywood is ready with holiday blockbusters. On January 1, 2019 look for movie theaters to be showing "Mary Poppins Returns", "Aquaman", "Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and the latest entry into the Transformers franchise, "Bumblebee".

Simply need a quick cup of coffee? Then Starbucks has the cure with regular store hours at most locations. Most Dunkin' and Krispy Kreme locations will also be open New Year's Day.

Looking to really chow down? McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Domino's, and other fast food joints are open, along with Denny's and IHOP which will welcome customers with open arms on New Year's Day. Check ahead to schedule a visit to Boston Market, however, which traditionally limits their hours (by location) on the first day of the year.

More restaurants open New Year's Day? They include Chick-fil-A, Chili's, Cracker Barrel, Domino's, Hardee's, Olive Garden, and Sonic.

For great savings on laptops and flatscreen TVs, Best Buy also opens a little later and closes a bit earlier on New Year's Day. Other big retailers like Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Barnes & Noble also open with slightly curtailed hours. Not sure about a location near year? Simply check store opening hours on the Web ahead of time.

Costco and Sam's Club continue their tradition of closing for the holidays -- including New Year's Day (but watch for BJ's to open their doors at 11AM and to remain until 7PM.)

And, if you want to send a last-minute package on New Year's Day, DON'T expect the post office, Fed-Ex or UPS store to handle it -- as they will be enjoying a full day of relaxation after the holiday rush. Since New Year's Day is a federal holiday, banks and the Wall Street stock market will also be closed.
