St.
Patrick's Day Parades
2007
Check
out where St. Paddy's Day parades and events are taking place
in Irish communities in cities
around the world on Friday, March 17, 2007 with our international
guide to St. Patrick's Day Parades including planned parade
routes, maps, pictures, fun & festivities...
The first
public St. Patrick's Day celebrations in America were in Boston
in 1737. The
very first St. Patrick's Day Parade in the USA was held
on New York City's lower Broadway in 1766 by a band of homesick
Irish ex-patriots.
This was
a time when the wearin' o' the green was still a sign of Irish
pride that was banned in Ireland. A parade reveling in the
freedom to speak Irish, sing Irish songs and play the pipes
to Irish tunes was very meaningful to the immigrants who had
fled their homes at such great cost leaving so much behind.
Times
have changed and, today, cities as diverse as Chicago, Montreal,
Sydney and Tokyo (yes, Japan) have joined in St. Patrick's
Day parades during a time of year when - ' tis true
- everyone is Irish.
One thing
that hasn't changed is the fun that everyone has on March
17th! Bagpipes and marching bands provide the background for
thousands to march in a parade of Irish pride and accomplishments....
