If gymnasts are really serious about bringing home the gold, then the Olympic tests can be counted on to really put them through their paces.

Whether the event involves swinging from rings, flying around the uneven bars, exhibiting artistic skills on the floor or balance beam -- gymnastics is always one of the most popular for summer spectators.

At the Rio Games, a total of 324 gymnasts will be competing in the three disciplines in the Olympic sport of Gymnastics – Artistic, Rhythmic. and Trampoline.

By far the most popular OIympic gymnastic events fall under the Artistic venue -- including incredible feats of grace and balance on the Pommel horse, Rings, Parallel bars, Horizontal bar, Uneven bars and Balance beam, as well as Vault and Floor,exercises.

While the US Women's Gymnastic team were the toast of the London 2012 Games, the Rio Games in 2016 is sure to not disappoint! The current US Women's Team, led by this year's American gymnastic superstar Simone Biles, once again remains the favorite to win big at the Rio Games.

2012 Olympic gymnastics recap

The US gymnastics women's team outshone all comers in the 2012 games with star performances by gold medal winners Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber.

In men's gymnastics, it was Japan's Kohei Uchimura who made international headlines after making history in a year before as the first gymnast to win three consecutive all-around world titles. He didn't disappoint at the 2012 games as he took home the gold for the men's all-around competition, but it was the Chinese team who dominated at the final.

• In Olympic gymnastics, men compete on parallel bars, high bar and pommel horse while women compete on the uneven bars and balance beam. The only overlapping events are vault and floor.

• Larissa Latynina of Russia still holds the Olympic record for 18 Olympic gymnastic medals including nine gold medals, five silver, and four bronze between 1956 and 1964.

• In the 1976 Olympics, Nadia Comaneci of Romania became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10.

• Kerri Strug made international headlines and Olympic gymnastics history when she nailed her vault on an injured foot to insure the gold medal for the United States team at the 1996 games.
