Alabama state sealAlabama levies a 2, 4, or 5 percent personal income tax, depending upon the amount earned and filing status. Taxpayers are not allowed to deduct their federal income tax from their Alabama state tax, but can deduct federal Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Residents must complete returns using Form 40 by April 15. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, tax filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.

This year, the filing deadline to submit 2016 tax returns is Tuesday, April 18, 2017, rather than the traditional April 15 date. Since April 15 falls on a Saturday this year, and Washington, D.C. will celebrate Emancipation Day on that Monday, the deadline will be pushed to the following Tuesday for most of the nation.
