Alabama Taxes
Alabama levies a 2, 4, or 5 percent personal income tax, depending upon the amount earned and filing status. Taxpayers are not allowed to deduct their federal income tax from their Alabama state tax, but can deduct federal Social Security and Medicare taxes.
Residents must complete returns using Form 40 by April 15. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.
NOTE: In 2012, the traditional filing deadline of April 15 falls on a Sunday. Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls on Monday. Therefore, the deadline this year for filing taxes is April 17, giving everyone two extra days to file their taxes.
