Filing Taxes Online
There
are unconfirmed rumors that filing electronically cuts the odds
of an audit. What's certain is that it speeds up the process -
and any refunds that are due.
The
IRS has claimed, "Electronic filing is important...for two
reasons. First, returns filed electronically are more accurate
and enable faster refunds, thus improving service for taxpayers.
"Second,
Congress has set as a goal of having all tax returns filed electronically
by 2007."
Of course, they're still working on that last goal!
Perhaps
when ALL states provide free e-filing services (through their
respective tax portals), e-filing will become even more popular.
Until then, whether you file your own taxes or use a paid preparer,
make sure to use an e-file program that is approved by both the
IRS and the state agency where you submit your taxes...
