Georgia's personal income tax system has six tax brackets, ranging from 1 percent to 6 percent. Social Security income is exempt, and taxpayers who are 62 years of age or older may be eligible for a retirement-income adjustment on their Georgia tax return.

Beginning in 2012, taxes on retirement income will be phased out.

Georgia residents must file their personal income tax using the Georgia Individual Resident Income Tax Form (500)  by April 15. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.

NOTE: In 2012, the traditional filing deadline of April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day - a holiday observed in the District of Columbia - falls on Monday. Therefore, the deadline this year for filing taxes is April 17, 2012 giving everyone two extra days to file their taxes.
