New York's state income tax rates range from 4 percent to 6.85 percent over five income brackets, depending on income and filing status.

New York residents are required to file taxes using IT-150 Resident Income Tax Return (short form) or the IT-201 Resident Income Tax Return (long form) by April 15 each year. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.

This year, the filing deadline to submit 2016 tax returns is Tuesday, April 18, 2017, rather than the traditional April 15 date. Since April 15 falls on a Saturday this year, and Washington, D.C. will celebrate Emancipation Day on that Monday, the deadline will be pushed to the following Tuesday for most of the nation.

NOTE: Form IT-150 has been discontinued. All full-year New York State residents must now file Form IT-201.
