New York's state income tax rates range from 4 percent to 6.85 percent over five income brackets, depending on income and filing status. New York residents are required to file taxes using IT-150 Resident Income Tax Return (short form) or the IT-201 Resident Income Tax Return (long form) by April 15 each year. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.

NOTE: In 2012, the traditional filing deadline of April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day - a holiday observed in the District of Columbia - falls on Monday. Therefore, the deadline this year for filing taxes is April 17, 2012 giving everyone two extra days to file their taxes.
