West Virginia levies an income tax on residents at rates of 3 percent to 6.5 percent over five tax brackets, depending on income and filing status. Residents are required to file income taxes using Form IT 140 by April 15 each year. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.

NOTE: In 2012, the traditional filing deadline of April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day - a holiday observed in the District of Columbia - falls on Monday. Therefore, the deadline this year for filing taxes is April 17, 2012 giving everyone two extra days to file their taxes.
