All
My Children, one of the longest-running soap opera's in American history, was broadcast every Monday through Friday on
the ABC network beginning on January 5, 1970.
Originally a half-hour in length,
All My Children was created by Agnes
Nixon. It was her first love and first major creation.
Making a major breakthrough
in daytime broadcasting was nothing new for AMC. One cast member was making changes
in more ways than one when Jeffrey Carlson, who played transgender
character, Zarf, transitioned to Zoe before millions of fans in 2005. On February 16, 2009, All My Children was once again making daytime history with the nuptials of Reese Williams and Bianca Montgomery, the first legal same-sex marriage in American daytime television.
Marking its 40th year on television in 2010, Susan Lucci (Erica Kane) remained as the only original cast member, and today Susan's fans surely remember her triumph in 1999 when she was finally awarded "Outstanding
Lead Actress in a Drama Series" at the Daytime Emmys (after years of being robbed!)
Sadly, a year later after 41 years on the air, All My Children was cancelled only to reemerge online in a series of webisodes via Hulu, Hulu Plus, and iTunes. Production finally halted in 2013.
