MAIN Arrow to Pop Culture Pop Culture Being Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown on BravoBobby Brown, a pop icon for the ages, kicked off his own reality show on the Bravo network June 30th, 2005 garnering 1.1 million viewers during it's first season.

Watching Bobby Brown and wife Whitney Houston slide into drug addiction, face bouts of jail time for drugs, DUI and battery, and rumored dealings with children's services was shocking, to say the least.

Until then, one could only wonder what life must be like for Bobby and Whitney whose lives had become a virtual rumor mill of drug addiction and physical abuse.

In Being Bobby Brown, the truth unfolded in on Bravo almost every night for sometimes hours at a time.

Bobby Brown, as often happened in true life, was always quickly overshadowed whenever wife Whitney Houston came within camera range. Cranky (when she was sober) or happy (when she was high), Houston became the overwhelming focus in some episodes like when she checked into a rehab clinic. Crystal meth was the reported thorn in her side this time.

For those who remembered Whitney Houston, the diva with the sweet smile and powerful gospel trained voice -- and husband Bobby, shining in the New Edition -- it was an extremely up-close look at the vagaries of fame and fortune. How much they had achieved, and lost, qualified as a reality true-life horror show.

Meanwhile, completely lost in all the true-life drama was the couple's innocent daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who audiences hoped would escape the train wreck she was unwittingly born into. But this was reality.

It was eight years after the cameras stopped rolling that Houston was found dead submerged in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As of May 2015, Bobbi Kristina Brown is currently suffering from "global and irreversible brain damage" following an almost exact repeat of her mother's sad end.

Being Bobby Brown only lasted one season. Houston wouldn't agree to another.
