Conan O'Brien
Born
in Brookline, Massachusetts on April 18, 1963, O'Brien was the
third of four boys in a staunchly Irish Catholic family headed
up by his father, a research physician at Brigham and Womens'
Hospital, and his mother, a Boston lawyer.
O'Brien later followed in the family tradition for excelling in
education persuits, and graduated valedictorian from Brookline
High School. He entered Harvard University shortly after, where
he began his fledgling career in comedy as a writer for Harvard
Lampoon. Receiving his B.A. degree in American history, he
eventually graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in 1985.
Following
graduation, OBrien moved to Los Angeles to join the writing
staff of HBOs Not Necessarily the News for two years
while performing in a variety of improvisational groups including
The Groundlings. In 1988, Saturday
Night Live producer Lorne Michaels hired him on as a staff
writer for the hit show. O'Brien made most of the opportunity
with such now-famous comedy sketches as "Mr. Short-Term Memory"
and The Girl Watchers garnering an Emmy Award for
Outstanding Writing in a Comedy or Variety Series in 1989. Following
the end of his stint at SNL in 1991, O'Brien was next hired to
write for the popular animated series, The
Simpsons, for which he eventually became the supervising producer.
Then, with
the departure of David
Letterman in 1993 to CBS, it was Lorne Michaels again who
called upon O'Brien to assume the late-night spot hosting Late
Night with Conan O'Brien.
The show has since won, or been nominated for, a variety of
awards for comedy writing.
Most recently,
NBC named O'Brien as the successor to Jay
Leno following Leno's planned retirement from The Tonight
Show in 2009.
