Who doesn't want to see what goes on behind those beautiful suburban doors? "Everyone has a little dirty laundry" is not only their tagline - but for real life as well.

Desperate Housewives is set on picture-perfect Wisteria Lane — (one of the houses on the set was the home of Ward and June Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver) —but less than perfect people live there now.

Susan (Teri Hatcher) is a divorced children's book author and single mother who is hungry for love (or at least for Mike, played by James Denton); Lynette (Felicity Huffman) left the corporate world to become the mother of four; Bree (Marcia Cross) is the local Martha Stewart, who doesn't have it quite as together as she seems; and Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) is an ex-model who has everything she thought she ever wanted. Last, but not least, is Edie (Nicollette Sheridan) - not your suburban garden-variety floozy.

Now nominated for Emmy Awards year after year, it is probably a kick in the pants for CBS, NBC, Fox, HBO, Showtime and Lifetime, all of whom turned away the pilot script. One of the reasons might have been the dark side of life that is portrayed. Although funny, the pilot opened with Mary Alice taking her own life and is narrated by her. All of these characters are trying to figure out what led her to such an end. How desperate was she??
