Born in Berlin, Germany on December 8, 1976 Dominic Monaghan at age 12 later moved with his family back to their native Manchester in the U.K.

Even at an early age, Monaghan loved acting and regularly performed in school plays, eventually joining a local acting troupe at the Manchester Youth Theatre.

From there, Monaghan's big break came when he won the role of amateur detective Geoffrey Shawcross in the television show Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, starring popular British actress Patricia Routledge, launching his professional acting career at age 18.

After four seasons with the show, the actor played in minor roles on British radio and TV shows and made his movie acting debut as a Russian sailor in Hostile Waters alongside Rutger Hauer in 1997.

It was during a stage performance in London when he was scouted for what was to become his breakout movie role as Merry the hobbit in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He eventually would devote two years to the project when all three installments were filmed back to back. His comical performance in the Academy award-winning blockbuster would later earn the actor instant recognition and appeal.

Today, with his face now known practically around the world, Monaghan is best known to American audiences for his role as Charlie, in the hit ABC drama, Lost.

Off the set, both he and Lost co-star Evangeline Lilly have been romantically linked since Lilly joined the cast in 2004.

Although no official announcement has yet been made, engagement rumors have swirled around Monaghan and Lilly for more than a year.
