Most recently in the news for his casting against type in such bad boy roles as Kevin in Sin City and Matt in Hooligans, the actor more famous for his role as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of Rings trilogy was born Elijah Jordan Wood on January 28, 1981 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In show busines since the age of five, Wood was enrolled by his mother in a local talent school which soon led to a move to Los Angeles for bit parts in TV commercials.

Wood's movie debut eventually came with a small role in Back to the Future II, graduating to bigger roles in such films as Avalon and Radio Flyer and opposite Mel Gibson in Forever Young.

Unlike many child actors, Wood made the transition to more mature roles very comfortably, aided by his adoration by young female fans as "Big Blue Eyes" and securing his position as a teen idol.

In 2001, Wood's worldwide fame was suddenly assured with the role of hobbit Frodo Baggins (playing alongside another teen hearthrob, Orlando Bloom) as he received top billing in the widely-acclaimed Lord of the Rings franchise.

Beginning with Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the first installation of director Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Elijah Wood soon became a household name around the world as he went on to reprise the role of Frodo in the second and third installments, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).

While Frodo threatened to type-cast the actor in other roles as a wide-eyed innocent, Wood has since taken on edgier roles in various films, most notably as the bizarre cannibal killer, Kevin, in Sin City, and with a lead role as a jaded American, Matt Buckner, lured into the violence of English soccer mania in Hooligans (aka Green Street in the UK).

Wood next takes the starring role in Everything is Illuminated, about a young man searching for the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazi's during World War II, slated for release in 2006.
