emma watsonEmma Watson has come a long way since her innocent role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movie saga!

Bursting upon the scene in 2001 as Hermione - the know-it-all but caring friend of Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Watson was born Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson on April 15, 1990 in Oxfordshire, England.

Up until being chosen to perform in the coveted role, Watson's only claim to noteriety came at age 7, when she was awarded first-prize in the Daisy Pratt Poetry Competition. Her only stage experience also occured during her early school days, having appeared in such student plays as Alice in Wonderland, The Happy Prince, and others.

At age 10, Watson was reportedly encouraged by teachers at her school to try-out for the role of Hermione after film producers called on young English performers to audition for the first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. In 2000, thousands of girls with much more acting experience than Watson came from every corner of the U.K. to answer casting calls for preproduction of the movie, based on the phenomenally successful first book by author J.K. Rowling.

Despite the intense competition, it was the inexperienced Emma Watson who claimed the same clear-eyed confidence and intelligence of the fictional character who she would eventually portray.

It would take a number of grueling auditions before Watson knew she landed the role, but later told the press, "Unlike Hermione, I've never been top of my class. In fact, quite the opposite! Although I am very bossy and my little brother tends to suffer a bit..."

Watson went on to portray Hermione in the other films in the Harry Potter franchise including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).

Watson next appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire released in November, 2005 and resumed filming on the fifth in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, in January 2006.

The following year, Emma Watson appeared on the July 2007 cover of Tatler magazine with a full fashion photo spread that signaled her ambition for a career outside the Harry Potter franchise -- including here first non-Potter role that same year in the BBC film Ballet Shoes.

Continuing to portray Hermione Granger into young adulthood on screen, Watson transformed her character from innocent know-it-all to one of the grittiest heroines on film as she did battle with the dark forces increasingly present in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and in the epic finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Today, the Hollywood actress and Hogwarts graduate continues to follow her own star with appearances in My Week with Marilyn in 2011, as well as a lead role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower in 2012.

Her next film, The Bling Ring, starred Watson in her first breakout "bad girl" role, based on a real-life character who was part of a teenage gang who stole from Hollywood stars.

Her latest film, Colonia, is a thriller set for release in 2015. Watson will also play Belle in a live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast in which she will sing in a film for the first time.

Away from the set, Emma Watson has been romantically linked to George Craig, the British singer of rock band One Night Only, and American actor Johnny Simmons. She also dated fellow-student Will Adamowicz who she met while studying English at Oxford University after both transferred from Brown University in Rhode Island. The couple split in 2014.
