MAIN Art & ... Pop Culture Eurovision Dance Contest

The glitz, the glamour - and lots of sequins - are on display at the world's 2nd annual Eurovision Dance Contest held this year at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, on Saturday, September 6, 2008.

Following the wild popularity of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing television series, (in the U.S. it's ABC's Dancing with the Stars) the competition venue is a familiar to fans of the Eurovision Song Contest which features a much-watched annual sing-off in May.

Now it's the dancers turn, as a live telecast showcases the ballroom dancing talents of couples from Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine and the UK.

Having won national championships in their respective countries, the 15 couples travel to Glasgow in 2008 to compete in the international Eurovision Dance Contest in both ballroom dance and freestyle categories.

And in the best Eurovision tradition, the winners are ultimately determined by home television viewers.

The BBC hosts the premier ballroom dance competition with broadcast feeds originating from BBC One to television networks throughout Europe via the Eurovision Network at 21:00 CET.
