Today one of the most popular soaps on daytime TV, "General Hospital" debuted on April 1, 1963.
The characters
live in the fictional town of Port Charles, set in upstate New
York. The enduring saga of Luke and Laura Spencer (Anthony Geary
and Genie Francis) continues. The Quartermaines are vital to the
life of this quaint little town, as Sonny Corinthos, Port Charles'
godfather, struggles to maintain his control....
General Hospital is the longest-running
dramatic serial on the ABC Television Network. In May of 2000 General Hospital broke the record
as the only daytime drama to ever receive the Daytime
Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama series a record seven times, making that the show's fifth
win in six years.
Luke and Laura's wedding ceremony
30 years ago won the biggest audience ever for a daytime soap. More than 30 million viewers tuned
in to see the dress and tissue boxes passed from hand to hand in offices and college dorms throughout
the USA.
Thanks to similar plot twists (along with the dramatic return of Luke and Laura in the early 90's) General Hospital is back in the
number 1 spot with daytime TV fans.
