george clooneyBorn May 6, 1961 in Lexington, Kentucky, George Clooney spent almost a decade in acting obscurity before landing the role of television's hottest heartthrob in the medical drama "ER" in 1994.

Early on, Clooney's only dream was to play professional baseball. However, following a failed tryout with the Cincinnati Reds he finally turned to acting. This, with a little help from his father, broadcaster Nick Clooney, and his aunt, singer and actress Rosemary Clooney.

Beginning in television commercials, Clooney signed on with Warner Bros. in a series of TV supporting roles, most notably in The Facts of Life, Roseanne, and Sisters.

His fame and fortune was finally assured with his starring role on ER when Clooney left the cast after four years to pursue a career in film.

Notable movie roles have since included The Perfect Storm with Mark Wahlberg, and the remake of the 1960 "Rat Pack" hit, Ocean's Eleven, and its sequel, Ocean's Twelve, released in late 2004 also starring Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.

In 2005, Clooney produced, wrote, and starred in Good Night, and Good Luck based on the life and career of 50's TV journalist Edward R. Murrow. He also produced and starred in the political thriller Syriana for which Clooney won for Best Supporting Actor at the 2006 Golden Globe Awards and again at the Academy Awards, where Clooney was also nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay for Good Night, and Good Luck.

Clooney also starred in the lead role of the 2007 Hollywood hit Michael Clayton, for which he was Oscar nominated for Best Actor. In 2012, Clooney was up for Best Actor yet again for his role in The Descendants for which he took home a Golden Globe award earlier in the year. The actor also received critical notice for his acting, writing, and directing role in The Ides of March in which Clooney played a US presidential candidate.

In total, Clooney has made Oscar history by becoming the most nominated Hollywood star in history -- and in a variety of categories -- including three for Best Actor as well as nods for Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay (for Ides of March) Best Director, and Best Picture (as producer of Oscar-nominated Argo in 2012)

Opposite Sandra Bullock in Gravity released in 2013, Clooney is next set to star in Disney's Tomorrowland in 2015.

Regularly seen at public events with supermodels draped over his arm, Clooney remained one of the world's most eligible bachelors until 2014 when he wed girlfriend and human rights lawyer, Amal Alamuddin, whom the actor had been dating for less than a year.

Clooney, who was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993, had always maintained that he would never again take another trip down the aisle.
