Grease : You're The One That I Want
Max
and Laura Go to Broadway
"Grease"
opened on Broadway in June 1972 and ran for close to 3,400 performances
which was a record at the time. In 1978 John
Travolta and Olivia
Newton-John starred in the movie version. The nation fell
in love with Danny and Sandy as they fell in love with each other.
"Grease"
is the highest-grossing movie musical ever and has also spawned
a mega-selling soundtrack.
June
2007 will mark the 35th anniversary of the Broadway opening of
the show, so what better way to celebrate the occasion than to
launch a revival of that very same show on Broadway again.
For
the first time, the biggest casting call ever for this revival
was held on national television with a chance for America to help
name the two lead roles of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski.
In
"American
Idol" fashion, the auditions were televised and the final
twelve contestants whittled down to one special Pink Lady and
an irresistable T-Bird. When the coveted roles were finally announced
it was Max and Laura, who will now be given a chance to strut
their stuff on Broadway this summer.
The host of the show was Billy
Bush and his co-host will be Denise
Van Outen, a British musical star. The musical's co-creator,
Jim Jacobs, revival director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall ("The
Pajama Game," "Little Shop of Horrors") and producer
David Ian served a judges.
