Originally known for his status as a TV teen heartthrob in his role on 21 Jump Street, Depp later went on to become a
serious adult actor respected for his choice of offbeat roles and sensitive, multi-textured performances.
He began his career as a Kentucky-born high school dropout with dreams of making it as a musician, but later fell into acting with a debut performance in the horror shocker, A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984, which later led to a successful run on the TV hit, 21 Jump Street.
With his teen following assured, Depp's Hollywood acting breakthrough came in 1990 in the title role of Tim Burton's film Edward Scissorhands. Since then, the actor has varied his roles enormously in such star turns as the cross-dressing director Ed Wood, as an undercover FBI agent in Donnie Brasco, as Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, and as a flamboyant over-the-top pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean.
From teen heartthrob on 21 Jump Street, Johnny Depp attained A-list status in Hollywood with such
varied roles as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean and as John Dillinger in Public Enemies.
Depp reprised his role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest in 2006, and the following year starred in the third part of the trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End released in May 2007.
Later that year, the actor also re-teamed with director Tim Burton for the title role of Sweeney Todd. In 2008, Depp took top honors at the MTV Movie Awards, receiving awards both for Best Comedic Performance in Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End and Best Villain for Sweeney Todd.
Depp next paired with Christian Bale starring as Chicago gangster John Dillinger in Public Enemies and made another 360-degree turn in his next role as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Opposite actress Angelina Jolie he appeared in the comedy thriller The Tourist, released in 2010. The following year, Depp made his fourth appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
His next major film appearance was in Dark Shadows, a send-up of the 70's TV soap opera, in which Depp played vampire Barnabas Collins. His most recent roles include Tonto in film version of the retro TV hit, The Lone Ranger, as the Wolf in Disney's 2014 film adaptation of the musical Into the Woods, and as notorious crime boss Whitey Bulger in Black Mass (2015).
Offscreen, Depp had been in a relationship with French pop singer Vanessa Paradis for 14 years when they split in January 2012. The couple have a daughter, Lily-Rose Melody Depp, and a son, John Christopher "Jack" Depp III.
The Hollywood actor is currently married to actress Amber Heard.
