Music stars the world over will gather in Berlin, Germany to celebrate the 16th annual MTV Europe Music Awards marking the fourth time that the Awards will be held in Germany — as the EMAs return to the original city where it was launched in 1994, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Watch for a splashy opening and various performances in front of the historic Brandeburg Gate this year as the EMAs also take advantage of the Berlin's newest addition to the music performance scene, the O2 World Arena.

Nominees are expected to be announced in late Summer 2009 with the live awards show presented in early November.

EMA 2008 Recap

Katy Perry was chosen to host the official awards ceremony with live performances by Pink, Kid Rock, The Killers, Duffy, and Beyonce, who was up for an Ultimate Urban award this year.

Other leading 2008 nominees included Alicia Keys (for Album of the Year, Ultimate Urban) and Coldplay (for Album of the Year and Most Addictive Track for "Viva La Vida").

The digital host of this year's online streaming videocast was the Web's most famous Hollywood gossip columnist, Perez Hilton who was in charge of live reports from backstage, along with red carpet interviews with celebs he loves to trash throughout the year.

Nominees are chosen by MTV, but fans have the final say on the top 5, and ultimately get to vote for performers in such categories as Album of the Year, Best Headliner, Most Addictive and, new this year — Best Act Ever.

2008 MTV EMA's Rickrolled

Nominees for Best Act Ever included Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, Tokio Hotel, U2 and ...wait for it ...Rick Astley.

Fans who voted for Rick prove that even the MTV EMA's are not safe from the infamous rickroll, the prank most prevalent among YouTubers in which the 80's star's hit "Never Gonna Give You Up" becomes a bait-and-switch for a more popular video. Ha ha. Not funny! Unless you're already in on the joke ...
