Norah
Jones
Born
on March 30, 1979 in New York City, Jones grew up in Dallas, Texas
estranged from her famous father, Indian musician, Ravi
Shankar.
With
a natural vocal talent, she later attended the Booker T. Washington
High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, winning the Down
Beat Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist in 1996, and
again in 1997.
Briefly
attending the University of North Texas for a degree in jazz piano,
Jones subsequently dropped out of college in 1992 to live the
Bohemian life in New York's Greenwich Village, joining the band
Wax Poetic while honing her songwriting skills.
Jones' first
big professional break came when the group was signed with Blue
Note Records in 2001. It wasn't long before a debut solo album
was planned for the rising young singer and the following year
saw the release of Come Away with Me, an instant success
with its mix of pop-flavored jazz hits that eventually went multi-platinum
and won Jones eight Grammy Awards.
Jones continued
her astounding success with the release of a second album, Feels
Like Home from which the single Here We Go Again, a
duet with the late Ray Charles, won Record of the Year at the
2005 Grammy
Awards.
In 2007, more
accolades followed when she released the first collection of songs
entirely written or co-written by her on a third Norah Jones album,
"Not Too Late."
