Rome HBO

The gory glory that was Rome....

Not to mention the steamy sexual politics, intrigue, treacherous characters, and raw human emotion that was Rome on HBO - a sort of Sopranos in togas.

One viewing of this killer drama, and you were hooked. HBO (a co-production with BBC) was the place to be every Sunday night for fully fleshed-out historic characters, plus a script that had viewers on the edge of their seats until the last weekly episode.

Rome HBO Season One

Ciaran Hinds, Kevin McKidd and Lindsay Duncan headed the cast that followed the rise of the ancient Roman Empire through the eyes of two foot soldiers.

Rome to the big screen?

Ciaran Hinds starred as Julius Caesar, the commander of Rome's conquering army in Gaul, and Kevin McKidd was the handsome Lucius Vorenus, one of the two foot soldiers around whom the drama unfolds.

Ray Stevenson was the swaggering legionary Titus Pullo, Vorenus's battlefield cohort; James Purefoy played Mark Antony, one of Caesar's powerful political allies; Lindsay Duncan was Servilia, the lover of Caesar and mother of Brutus, while Polly Walker vamped it up as the powerful, manipulative and sexy Atia.

Rome HBO Season 2

Despite rumors that high production costs would prohibit another Rome on HBO season, a full second season returned January 14, 2007.

However, it proved to be end of days for Rome, whose high costs on the world's biggest movie set made it too expensive to continue.

Fans around the world might continue to mourn Rome's passing until producers realize that there's a large enough audience for ....a full-fledged Hollywood movie? Here's hoping...
