MAIN Pop Culture Reality TV Survivor 17

CBS premiered the 17th season of it's successful Survivor franchise, Survivor Gabon - Earth's Last Eden on Thursday, September 25.

The show was originally projected to air on September 18 in the normal one hour format, but a special two-hour opening saw two of the season's many eliminations.

The premiere marked another first - Survivor Gabon is the first in the series to be telecast in High Definition. Filming started in June and wrapped in August. The cast is supposed to be a throwback to the first season with a good mix of ages and fewer "mactors," model and actor wanna-bes using the show to jump start a career. The first seasons, featuring real people in improbable situations, captured audience imagination - and ratings - that producers would like to repeat in Gabon.

How Survivor Works

The strategy Survivor contestants use on each other to form alliances and defeat enemies has roots in the history of war.

Jeff Probst explains, “Survivor is a war. The show deals with leadership and how you defeat the other tribe. It’s interesting how much it plays into the game all the way through.”

Survivor Gabon finale & winner : Unbeatable Bob wins his fifth consecutive challenge of the season as conniving Kenny ("...they got me good!") is first to be blindsided and voted off in the final.

Next, came quiet Susie (that's right, SUSIE!) who wins immunity in the second round. Bob, of course is the natural choice to be voted off next, but votes are tied between Bob and Matty who square off in a tiebreaker fire-making challenge.... and Bob stays in the game!

The ultimate winner? Who else? Bob gets the most votes from the Survivor jury and walks away with $1 million ....and the title of Oldest Sole Survivor Ever.
