Sombrero Cake

Number of Servings: 6-8
Prep Time: 1 Hour Skill Level: Easy

Ingredients:

sombrero cakeDuncan Hines Classic Yellow Cake Mix
9x9 round baking pan
1 dome baking pan
Vanilla frosting
Food coloring
Writeable icing tubes in various colors
Red licorice strands
Jelly beans

Instructions:

1. Follow directions on the back of the cake mix box. Once the batter is mixed, pour half of it into the 9x9 round pan, and the remaining half into the dome pan.

2. When a fork can be inserted into the center of the cakes and comes out clean, the cakes are done baking. Remove the cakes from the pans immediately and put them on cooling racks to cool for 15 minutes.

3. Once the cakes are cooled, use a knife to hollow out the center of the round cake. This creates the upturned look of the sombrero.

4. Tint the vanilla frosting by mixing three parts yellow, two parts red, and one part blue food coloring. Adjust colors, if necessary, and mix well until you reach the desired color.

5. Frost the round cake. Place the dome cake in the center of the round cake, then frost the dome (frosting will also help the dome stay in place.)

6. Decorate using string licorice around the bottom of the dome. Further decorate with writable icing around the rim, and with jelly beans around the side.

Ole!

Helpful Hints:

I brought this cake to a Fiesta themed party and won first place for creativity. I hope you have a blast making it and even more fun showing it off!

You'll need two pans, one round pan and one dome shaped pan The bigger the sombrero the bigger the pans will need to be. I used a 9x9 round pan for the base of the sombrero. I found a pan that could bake four dome shaped cakes at once and just used one mold.
