Swimming on the Ol' Prairie?

Grab your beach chair, and a nice tall cool one, and be pleasantly surprised by the miles of shoreline in state reservoirs and lakes, affording lots of Midwest family fun for beachcombing, hiking, boating, bird watching and more...

25 miles southwest of Wichita, for example, Lake Afton Park features a 258-acre man-made lake with swimming, fishing, and action-packed sporting areas for water skiing and boating.

In Kansas City's backyard, check out Shawnee Mission Park - one of the state's most popular offering a swimming beach and bathhouse concessions, sailboarding, fishing, boating, horseback riding, and more. Located in Olathe, Kill Creek Park is another cool spot offering a swimming beach, marina, and 12 miles of hiking trails.

The best beach in the state? Although many Kansans may have their personal favorite, according to a survey by USA Today in 2012, the top pick was the beach at Scott State Park in Scott City.

Just up ahead, check out more information on where to cool down when the temperatures rise in Kansas, with guides to lake beaches and shorelines offering top locations to 'chill' the whole summer long...
