MAIN Sports Baseball American League Boston Red Sox
The Boston baseball team of the American League started it's career with a bang! In 1903 the Pittsburgh Pirates were the favorites playing against the team from Boston in the first World Series ever. The underdogs won and continued to win....until 1918. Since then the Red Sox Nation has been on a long road of faith. The 1918 Red Sox team is famous for many reasons but most notable is the fact that it was the last World Series the team won until 2004.
The Red Sox first played at The
Huntington Avenue Grounds. The stadium was the site of the first
World Series game in 1903.
It was a while before the team had an actual name. Some nicknames they had were "The Boston Americans", "The Boston Pilgrims", and "The Bostons." In 1908 owner John I. Taylor finally chose "The Red Sox" as the team's name based on the team's red socks that they started wearing that year.
Not only did John Taylor name the team he named their stadium too.
He said, "It's in the Fenway section of Boston, isn't it? Then
name it Fenway Park."
It opened on April 20, 1912 making it
the oldest ballpark still in active use in Major League Baseball.
Fenway
Park didn't even make the top page in the newspaper the day it opened, being that it opened five days after the Titanic sank. The historic Huntington Avenue Grounds were demolished in 1912 when the Red
Sox left to play at Fenway Park.
Besides
being the home to the Boston Red Sox, the stadium is most famous
for the left field wall called "The
Green Monster ". Most Red Sox fans just call it "The
Wall." The wall is the highest in professional baseball which
means that many hits that would be home runs in other parks are
"close but no cigar" in Fenway. They are so rare that two home runs
that actually made it over are among the most famous in baseball
history.
There is a famous Citgo
sign that brings smiles to Red Sox fans everywhere. There was
talk of removing it at one point but the fans protested and won...the
sign stayed. The red
seat is another famous piece of Red Sox history. On June 9,
1946, Ted Williams hit a blast to right field, 502 feet from home
plate. That shot was the longest ever hit at Fenway, and the seat
has been painted red to mark the spot.
Even
if you are not a baseball fan you probably know of the Yankees vs. Red Sox
rivalry. Babe Ruth is a baseball name everyone knows and a major reason for this historic rivalry.
The Babe began his
career as a baseball player with the Red Sox when he was only 19
years old. His talent was top of the line and his team benefitted
from it. That would all change.
"The Curse of the Great Bambino"
was initiated when, in December 1919, new owner Harry Frazee sold
Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $100,000 and a $350,000 loan
to finance Frazee's Broadway production interests. It is said that
the Red Sox's inability to win a World Series began when that trade
took place.
It was the Bambino's curse put on the Bo Soxs for trading away Ruth. The curse lasted 84 years, until all those involved with that trade... and just about anyone else who remembered seeing Ruth play in Boston, were gone.
Babe
Ruth went on to become one of the greatest baseball players
in history breaking and setting all kinds of records...for the NY
Yankees. The Boston Red Sox played amazing baseball year after year, but not until the 2004 World Series did they make it through to become the World Champions...and end the Curse forever.
From the all time great players such as Ted
Williams, Carl
Yastrzemski, Pedro
Martinez, all the way up to the current players captain Jason
Varitek, and first baseman Kevin
Youkilis, there is always hope for this team to win the World Series again. So say the fans....
