To regular football gear such as helmets and shoulder pads - now add garters, bras and panties - and you have all the makings of a pop culture phenomenon known as lingerie football.

Begun in 2004 as the Lingerie Bowl shown on pay-per-view television as a red hot alternative to the Super Bowl network TV half-time show - Lingerie League football games have since skyrocketed in popularity.

Usually televised during Super Bowl halftime, in 2012 Lingerie Bowl IX is scheduled to be televised on Sunday, February 5, 2012 beginning at 1PM PT (4PM on the East Coast) on MTV2 live from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

And why not?

This ain't your backyard touch football game. For women who want to play semi-pro football this may be the only alternative to show off their very real athletic ability. Games are played at venues throughout a regular season in NFL, NHL and MLS arenas and stadiums.

Sure, lingerie league teams go by names like Chicago Bliss and Philly Passion, but like other professional indoor football leagues, lingerie games are played full contact, and consist of two 17-minute halves separated by a 15-minute halftime.

"Sexy" sells, but the scoring in these games is not the kind usually associated with lingerie! In addition to pay-per-view broadcasts, a growing audience for Lingerie Football League games can also tune into cable channel MTV2, as well as recaps regularly seen on YouTube.
